Description of the offer
General presentation
The Bibliotheque de l’Ecole du Louvre - Majid Boustany is a specialised university library. Its mission is, on the one hand, to create a documentary offer intended to support the courses provided at the school, particularly for first-cycle students and, on the other, the conservation of specific heritage collections.
The library's printed and electronic collections are listed in the SUDOC catalogue.
Printed Resources
Monographs
Around 38,000 pieces including a corpus and various artists with more than 10,000 volumes.
The documentary offer covers the following subjects:
- archaeology
- art history from prehistory to the 21st century on all continents
- museology
- museography
The largest thematic corpora are about painting, archaeology and general art history, followed by non-European arts, architecture and history.
Journals
- Ongoing subscriptions to 68 titles.
- Some titles are available in electronic version.
Students’ dissertations (second and third cycles)
In-depth research dissertations (third cycle) have been kept in the library since the origins of the school. The oldest dates from 1886. These dissertations are available, either in printed form only, or in electronic format after authentication and verification of access rights, remotely or on site only for dissertations which were digitalised for conservation purposes.
Second-cycle dissertations have been kept in a printed form since the 1980s and systematically since 1994. They have been submitted electronically since 2008. Approximately 300 second-cycle dissertations are submitted each year.
Interlibrary loan requests are not accepted for this type of document.

The library provides students and speakers with two types of digital resources:
External resources
Encyclopaedia, databases or online journals are directly accessible with the Full Text Finder search tool. You can access these documents in full from a search by journal title, major themes or by navigating through the list ranking them alphabetically.
- Encyclopaedia universalis
For a first approach in a thematic area, to contextualise a subject, the Encyclopaedia Universalis provides access to articles, geographical maps, short videos or mental maps. - Newe Pauly
English version and original German version of the Encyclopedia of Antiquity Sciences. - Artstor
This iconographic database offers a collection of several million images, for educational or research use and for non-commercial purposes only. - JSTOR
This database provides access to more than 450 journals in full in the humanities and social sciences.

Specific resources at the École du Louvre
The second cycle dissertations defended since 2008 and a portion of the third cycle dissertations or theses can be consulted directly from the PLEIADES catalogue after authentication and verification of access rights.
To access these resources, readers must log onto PLEIADES with their “ecoledulouvre.com” account.

Free access
Most of the collections are freely accessible. The classification system offers a thematic organisation which covers the major areas of art history and collections as well as a corpus of artists classed by country and century.
Loans
The majority of collections are available for loans, to take back home. However, journals and dissertations of the school's students are excluded.
- 7 documents for a duration of two weeks.
- 1 extension possible on request on site, by telephone (01.55.35.18.75) or online (personal space on PLÉIADES).
- Late penalties: 1 day loan suspension for 1 day late.
Deferred communication (silo)
Certain fragile works, second and third cycle-dissertations and journals prior to 2000 cannot be borrowed, and are subject to a communication request (to be made before 5pm for consultation the following morning).
Book reservations
Books currently on loan can be reserved from the personal space on PLÉIADES. Upon return, the work will be put aside for the reader for 48 hours.
Interlibrary loan
Interlibrary loan is possible for works located in an establishment outside the Paris region. The request must be sent to [email protected].
The second and third-cycle dissertations by Ecole du Louvre students cannot be loaned between libraries, and can only be consulted on site.
Supply of images to teachers at the Ecole du Louvre
Access to the PLÉIADES image catalogue is reserved for teachers after authentication.
Opening times and conditions of access
Opening times
Monday to Friday from 9am to 7pm.
- Loan from 9am to 6.45 pm.
- Consulting documents in the restricted area: requests to be made the day before, by 5pm., consultation from Monday to Friday from 9am.
Annual closure: one week between Christmas and New Year's Day and two weeks at the beginning of August.
Reduced opening hours in July and August.
Access conditions
The library is accessible:
- to Ecole du Louvre students and teachers as well as students in the preparatory class for the conservator entrance exams, with their valid card
- to external readers by appointment (on-site consultation exclusively)
